Drive-in Blues 1986 (27 mins)
Drive-in Blues was filmed during the summer of l985 following several months of contacting drive-in theatre owners. The location shoot took place over a five-week period. The film crew travelled 5000 miles through Texas and Colorado, on the trail of living, dying, and abandoned drive-ins. During the research stage, Krawitz contacted several companies around the country that were in the business of building drive-in screens. Some of these companies had diversified into the area of sign-building as a means of survival. Contact with one such company, Selby Industries, resulted in a scene of the demolition of two movie screens. A drive-in theater in Connecticut was razed to make way for a condominium. Many of the archival food ads and promotional trailers featured in Drive-in Blues were found lying in dust-covered boxes in projection booths and others were made available through the generosity of collectors and film buffs. Many of the trailers had not been screened in decades. Since Drive-in Blues was filmed, all but two of the "living" drive-ins featured in the film have gone out of business.

The Definitive Story of the American Drive-In Movie (1hr. 25 mins)
Once a vibrant part of American culture, drive-in movie theaters numbered nearly 5000 across America during their peak in the mid-1900's. Today, less than 400 remain. In a nation that loves cars and movies, why haven't they survived? Going Attractions examines the drive-in theater's role in American culture from its invention in 1933, through its peak in the late 50's, to its rapid decline in the 70's and 80's. Fueled by the recent resurgence of drive-ins, this nostalgic look at American culture, family and entertainment tells the story of a changing nation and places the drive-in within the context of U.S. political, economic and social changes. Features interviews with over 20 renowned directors, film historians and drive-in owners.

RARE (NOS) VHS TAPES OF THE PBS WGBH DOCUMENTARY "ROCK & ROLL" 1995

Rock & Roll - Public television's 1995 epic 10-part documentary mini-series traces the history and evolution of rock and roll music, from its rhythm and blues, country, gospel and jazz roots in the early 1950s, through the advent of folk rock, soul, psychedelia, heavy metal, glam, funk, punk, and reggae, to the emergence of rap in the early 1990s.

Episode 1
Renegades travels southern backroads to New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville, then north to Chicago, interviewing Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, pioneer disk jockey Hoss Allen and producers Dave Bartholomew, Sam Phillips and Phil and Marshall Chess along the way.  These renegades of the '50s reveal how they borrowed from rhythm and blues, country, gospel, and jazz to create a whole new sound--rock and roll.  Listen for Little Richard's "Tutti-Frutti," and "Good Golly Miss Molly," Elvis' "Blue Suede Shoes," "Bo Diddley," by Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry's "Maybellene," and "Johnny B. Goode," and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On."

Episode 2
In the Groove reports on the years between Elvis and The Beatles, when the hit single became an intricately crafted work of art and producers, songwriters and musicians created studio magic. In interviews with Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, Ben E. King, Brian Wilson, Carole King, Sonny Bono and "king of the surf guitar" Dick Dale among others, this video recounts the era of sweet soul and girl groups when a new rock genius reigned--the producer.  Great songs include Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock," Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," and "Spanish Harlem," The Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," The Shirelles' "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," The Ronnettes' "Be My Baby," and The Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl."

Episode 3
Shakespeares in the Alley looks at the towering influences of Bob Dylan and The Beatles on rock and roll and at the brief but influential flowering of "folk rock" inspired by the Dylan/Beatles axis in the mid `60s.  In this video: footage of Dylan and the Fab Four and interviews with Beatles producer George Martin, key Dylan session musician Al Kooper, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, Roger McQuinn and David Crosby of The Byrds and poet Allen Ginsberg.  Great songs include The Beatles' "She Loves You," and "Eleanor Rigby," Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and both the Dylan and Byrds versions of "Mr. Tambourine Man," Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence," Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe."

Episode 4
Respect chronicles the transformation of black gospel music into a defining sound for all Americans.  Also, soul music's role in the simultaneous quest for African American equality in the `60s.  On hand to tell the tale: Berry Gordy Jr., Ray Charles, Martha Reeves, Mary Wilson, Booker T. and the MG's, Wilson Pickett, Maxine Powell of the Motown "Charm School", Motown choreographer Cholly Atkins, and many more.  The program journeys from Detroit's Motown Records to Stax Records in Memphis.  Last stop: the FAME studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama where Aretha Franklin, a Detroit preacher's daughter, made musical magic.  Listen for Martha and The Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street," The Temptations singing "The Way You Do the Things You Do," The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" and Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour," and "Mustang Sally," Aretha Franklin's "RESPECT."

Episode 5
Crossroads traces the blues--another African American tradition that changed the sound of rock and roll--from Mississippi Delta to Chicago to the UK, where this earthy rich sound inspired a host of young Clapton, John Mayall, Keith Richards and Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones and Jeff Beck tell how their hits introduced American rock fans to their own indigenous blues masters, like Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker.  Also in this video Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Jimmy Page on Jimi Hendrix, the dawning of the guitar hero and the birth of heavy metal.  Memorable music includes The Rolling Stones' ("I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," The Animals' "House of the Rising Sun," Eric Clapton and Cream's version of "Crossroads Blues," Jimi Hendrix's "Wild Thing," and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

Episode 6
Blues in Technicolor takes viewers on a trip into the psychedelic rock world of the late `60s and early `70s.  Using interviews with The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd, this video shows how a bohemian folk culture based in San Francisco set off an international explosion of musical experimentation and eclecticism--much of it drug-inspired.  Listen for "Eight Miles High," by The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," The Beatles' "All You Need is Love" and Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne."

Episode 7
The Wild Side tours through the rock and roll theatrics of the `70s, when bands like The Velvet Underground, The Doors and David Bowie brought the decadent dramas of life in the underground into the limelight.  Take a walk down the darker side of the street in Los Angeles, New York, Detroit and Berlin with The Doors' Ray Manzarek and producer Paul Rothchild, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Alice Cooper and Kiss' Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.  Listen for Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," The Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man," The Doors' "The End" and "Light My Fire," David Bowie's "Oh, You Pretty Things," and "Heroes," and Alice Cooper's "Eighteen."

Episode 8
Make it Funky Soul music stretches to create a rock and roll revolution in rhythm and attitude in the '70s.  Innovators James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton and famed bass players Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins take viewers on an hour of funk as the music becomes bolder and more expressive of the realities of black life.  Filmed in New York, San Francisco and Philadelphia, the program also examines how funky dance hits blazed a musical trail to the disco-craze of the late '70s.  Great songs include James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Cold Sweat," "Dance to the Music" by Sly and the Family Stone, Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff," and "Flashlight" by George Clinton.

Episode 9
Punk explores two late '70s musical innovations that shaped rock and roll through the next decade: punk and reggae.  In New York, members of Blondie, Talking Heads, Television and The Ramones tell how they inadvertently created the cynical, urban, stripped-down sound that became punk rock.  In London, punk takes off with The Sex Pistols, and members of The Wailers and The Clash recall how Jamaican reggae, another musical form of rebellion, crossed international boundaries, deeply influencing punk and pop rock.  Listen for The Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop," Patti Smith's "Horses," Talking Heads' "Psychokiller," and "Take Me To The River," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," The Sex Pistols' "No Fun," and "God Save the Queen," The Clash's "London Calling," and Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle."

Episode 10
The Perfect Beat begins at a time when megastars like Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Metallica filled arenas around the world and moves on to chronicle the rise of a new musical form: rap.  From the Bronx to Detroit, from Chicago to Manchester, England, from Grandmaster Flash to Run-DMC, from De La Soul to British innovators New Order to The Beastie Boys, the program traces the evolution of this new sound in the '80s and early '90s.  The video shows how superstars like Madonna and Prince folded rap and its funky electronic offshoots, techno and house, into their music, and how MTV ultimately embraced it.  And the beat goes on.  Sound track includes "The Message," by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, "Planet Rock," by Afrika Bambaata & Soul Sonic Force, Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," "Walk This Way" by Run DMC and Aerosmith, The Beastie Boys' "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Prince's "Sign O' The Times."

The Marconi Experiment "A Musical Renaissance"

"Arise my heart and lift your voice with music. For he who shares not the dawn with his songs shall be one of the sons of everdarkness."

"Dark roots of song flung to the outer limits." "Arlo & Otis, Dylan & Donovan, Bach & The Beatles rippling in sound waves over the sands of time." "Yesterday's hopes, today's blues & tomorrow's dreams roll across your mind, seeking out your soul."

----------------------------------------------

"FM was like what Internet radio is now, It was the Wild West. There was little to lose and a whole lot to gain. If my four-hour show succeeded, the rest of the station would follow suit." -Dave Herman

----------

"And I do remember Dave Herman's 1st night on the "Marconi Experiment". He was looking for input from listeners and was playing some very "non-progressive" lp cuts.... Mamas & Papas, Classics IV, Union Gap ... that kind of stuff."  -Lew White

----------

"The free-form programming merged music with the alternative culture, the anti-war culture and the hippie culture," says DJ Dave Herman, back then just a young kid from Asbury Park looking for a job in radio. "Philly was a risky town. It was run by [Mayor] Frank Rizzo, and considered conservative and very mainstream."

A few other DJs in Philadelphia may have flirted with free-form around the same time, but WMMR's switch is the most legendary.

At the time, WMMR played middle-of-the-road, smooth pop by Sinatra and Como. There were no DJs; everything was automated.

In the spring of 1968, Dave Herman finally persuaded WMMR to let him broadcast a trial free-form show. Herman called it The Marconi Experiment after the man who invented the wireless radio.

For four hours a night, from 8 p.m. until midnight, Herman would mix up the Moody Blues, the Stones, Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Dead. He'd introduce every show with a trademark: the song "Flying" by the Beatles dubbed together with a floaty incantation by Kahlil Gibran: "Arise my heart and lift your voice with music. For he who shares not the dawn with his songs shall be one of the sons of everdarkness."

The show was an immediate hit, eventually convincing the station to try free-form 24 hours a day in 1969.

Where The Name The Marconi Experiment Comes From

Dave Herman is one of my great radio heros and mentors. Those of you who may have lived in the NY area probably remember him mostly from his tenure as the "morning man" on WNEW-FM during most of its 33-year history as one of the first of the progressive, free-form, underground stations — and one of those that transitioned into "Album-Oriented Rock" (before finally self-destructing a few years ago). Dave coined "The Marconi Experiment" as the name for his late-night show on WMMR in Philadelphia, beginning somewhere around 1967-68.

Prior to 1967, companies that owned both an AM and FM station in major markets (over 100,000 population) were permitted to simulcast. That is, they aired the same programming on both AM and FM. In 1967, the FCC instituted the "50/50" rule, mandating that those stations air separate programming at least 50% of the time. (This was when the FCC still regulated radio, unlike now, where they seem more concerned with Howard's mouth and Janet's breast than and real control over the "airwaves that belong to the people."

Stations in major markets started to experiment with their FM stations, which weren't really making any money anyway. One of the major groups (meaning owning the maximum 7 AM, 7 FM, 7 TV stations), Metromedia, began to convert most of the FM stations to "progressive" or "underground" rock formats. They were not the first, but they were nearly always the second in each market. And so Dave Herman left WHTG in Asbury Park, NJ (a station where I would work much later!) for Philadelphia, giving birth to The Marconi Experiment.

One of the things that Dave mentioned to me was, because of the late hour (10pm-2am), people would tell him they were climbing into bed, putting on headphones, and falling asleep listing to him. As Dave put, "Scared the shit out of me! I realized that everything I was saying was going right into their sub-conscious, unfiltered." One of the many things I learned from Dave (most of them by listening to him to do radio over the years; some by talking during the times we've worked together in various settings) was to think about what you're doing and what influence it might be having on those listening to you. I try to always keep that in mind.

I've lost touch with Dave, so I hope he won't mind my borrowing the name for this show. So thanks, Dave, for everything and I hope you're doing well somewhere in NYC.

----------

There was a new radio show in Philadelphia back then on WMMR, an FM station, called “The Marconi Experiment.” Hosted by Dave Herman, it came on from 7-midnight right after the Frank Sinatra Hour. The Marconi Experiment featured bands like Cream, Traffic, the Steve Miller Band and the Grateful Dead. These were groups that you heard only on The Marconi Experiment. Top 40 radio would not touch this stuff. The presentation of the music was different as well. No screaming jocks, but rather a sincere sense of brotherhood was conveyed from the station to the audience. We were all in on something new and exciting, maybe even illegal. It was underground radio and I was hooked. I had an FM radio in my car! I think I must have spent the entire summer of 1967 driving around at night, listening to the radio.  -Dwight Tindle

On April 29, 1968, underground radio was born in Philadelphia. On that day, two radio stations simultaneously launched a whole new brand of rock programming in the city. The good-time jocks of the '50s and early '60s disappeared behind a puff of smoke and a Phil Spector wall of sound, and a stoned-out generation of music freaks prepared to take their place.

On WMMR, a disc jockey from Asbury Park took to the airwaves with a show he called The Marconi Experiment. Dave Herman had a deep, mellow voice and always sounded stoned. He'd play whole albums, and the long versions of songs--like the Chambers Brothers' Time Has Come Today, a big Philadelphia favorite. He'd go hours without playing commercials. His on-air style was casual, almost familial. He sounded like he was right there in the same room with you, passing the bong your way.

----------

It was the Summer of Love, a time of Vietnam and Nixon and Hendrix, and as rock music made its first tentative steps to the formerly all-classical FM band, everything began to change. In the 1960s, 93.3 was known as WIP-FM, and simulcasted the MOR format of its sister station WIP-AM. Around 1966, the call letters were changed to WMMR, which stood for "MetroMedia Radio", the station's owner. The format remained the same, but it was no longer a simulcast - WMMR now had its own programming, but the announcements were pre-recorded by the AM jocks.

On April 29, 1968, a program called the Marconi Experiment debuted, which signaled the begining of the station's progressive rock format. For the next couple of years, the station was part of the "underground" FM movement, where the jocks would play whatever they wanted and were generally left alone by management who concentrated on the more profitable AM side.

----------

WMMR Started out as WIP-FM, simulcasting its AM sister on 610. It became WMMR in the mid-1960s and had an "underground" or progressive rock sound. Remember the "Marconi Experiment" with Dave Herman, later of NYC's WNEW-FM. That "format" gradually evolved into more commercial sounding album rock which the station still features. WMMR used to be owned by Metromedia, hence the WMMR call letters.

----------

A native of Philadelphia, Dwight Tindle knew he wanted to be in radio before he was old enough to vote. His biggest inspiration was an underground show called "The Marconi Experiment," named after the famous radio inventor. Tindle remembers a deejay by the name of Dave Herman spinning the music of then-unknown artists Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead. In 1969, Herman told his listeners to go to a concert in Saugherteys, New York, for a concert featuring Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Richie Havens. The concert, of course, was Woodstock.

WMMR Airchecks recorded in the late 60's - early 70's
by ((( MARCONIEX ))) aka Rick Del Rio

SPECIAL NOTE!

This is the new improved un-edited version of this aircheck.

1. I want it to be known that I was the person who originally recorded this aircheck.
2. These mp3PRO files were made directly from the MASTER reels.
3. I'm releasing these airchecks in the mp3PRO format only! If you have a copy of any of these airchecks & they are wav or any other type of format other than mp3PRO, you were screwed!  "YOU NOW HAVE (at the very least..) 2nd GENERATION DIGITAL"

----------

The Reel Story Behind "The Beautiful Beatles Festival" Aircheck.

The MASTER reel was originally stolen from me by a so-called friend back in '69. For the past few years, ever since I got into collecting airchecks with the help of the internet, I had been hoping & wondering if I would ever find the MASTER reel. One day I stumbled upon someone who had a who knows what generation, cassette copy of this aircheck. Still not knowing whether it was a copy of my original aircheck or not, I decided to put out an A.P.B. for the MASTER tape.

After a few months I received an email from another collector, who then told me that he new who had the MASTER tape. It turns out that a dj had the MASTER tape which he said that he had found in a neighbors trash can right around the same time that my tape was stolen. "Gee what a coincidence" I then made contact with this dj who was willing to part with the MASTER reel for $60.

I was able to confirm that it was my original reel because of something that I had heard one time, somewhere. That being that all typewriters have a so-called fingerprint of their own in that the letters that are printed to paper are not always aligned perfectly in a straight accurate line like in this note that you are reading right now. In other words the letter "A" might lean slightly crooked to the left, or slightly lower then the rest of the letters.

In the sixties the only label making machine that I new of was my fathers typewriter. Also.. I used to buy labels that I could only find at Radio Shack, and which I still have a few left from the sixties. Both the crooked letters & label on the reel box matched the new sample that I made using my fathers old typewriter that I now own.

"A-Voila" The return of the missing link!

Anyway.. getting back to the recording, on the version of this aircheck that’s been in circulation for some years now, when the dj released the aircheck he left out both the very beginning & the tail end of the aircheck from the MASTER reel. The songs that he left out are:

----------

(PART THAT WAS NOT IN CIRCULATION BEFORE "SHE LOVES YOU")

01. wmmr id 69 (old) (0:19)
02. Herman Station id2 (0:10)
03. Beatles - Flying (2:13)
04. Beatles - Day Tripper (2:46)
05. Fever Tree - Day Tripper We Can Work It Out (3:31)
06. Beatles - We Can Work It Out (2:12)
07. zHerman > Phillys Baseball 69 (0:08)
08. zlocal Philly news 69 (0:27)
09. Beatles - Paperback Writer (2:15)
10. Beatles - Chains (2:24)
11. wmmr id 13 (old 2) (0:14)
12. Beatles - Hello Goodbye (3:25)

The aircheck that’s been in circulation cuts in with "She Loves You" which follows "Hello Goodbye" then ends with "Love Me Do" which cuts out at the very end of song.

(PART THAT WAS NOT IN CIRCULATION AFTER "LOVE ME DO")

52. Beatles - Don't Let Me Down (3:32)
53. Beatles - Little Child (1:42)
54. R0 1b Herman 16 (0:22)
55. wmmr 69 (station id)2 (0:14)

----------

Oh.. One last note!

When I first started recording airchecks, I was very impatient with dj chatter. So what I started doing was cutting out the dj chatter and leaving only the music. What I did was this, I recorded the whole thing, then went back & tried to erase poor old Herman talking away about "The Beatles". I just wanted to hear the music not the chatter. Probably because I had already been tired of all of the dj chatter on the AM stations.

On the MASTER reel I erased Dave Herman talking up until after the end of "We Can Work It Out". All that’s left are minutes of silence between the 1st four songs, which of course I did not include with my official release of "The Beautiful Beatles Festival". I now regret erasing Herman!
